When you remove the people’s right to bear arms, you create slaves.

The American Revolution would never have happened with gun control.

Do you remember when your mother would ask you “If all of your friends jumped off a bridge, would you jump off a bridge too? That’s the way I feel about AK-47’s.

Most of my friends own an AK-47. Many of my friends own several AK-47’s. And yet I have avoided buying one for years.

My reticence to invest in the AK-47 weapon platform has been driven partially by a focus on NATO calibers and partially by disdain for the poor manufacturing quality of most AK-47’s.

Arsenal, Inc. of Las Vegas Nevada is manufacturing AK-47’s which provide solutions to both concerns.

Arsenal builds AK-47’s in NATO 5.56 x 45mm (U.S. .223) caliber, as well as the Russian 7.62 x 39mm and 5.45 x 39.5mm calibers.

I would recommend that you select an Arsenal model that features:

U.S. manufacture

Milled receiver

Threaded muzzle

Bayonet lug

Black polymer furniture

Scope rail

The NATO buttstock works better for people with longer arms; the Warsaw Pact buttstock works better for people with shorter arms.

Caliber choice is an open argument. I prefer 5.56×45 because I think that’s the ammunition I will be most able to find when civilization really collapses here in the United States.

It seems to me that Savage Firearms is currently manufacturing the perfect deer rifle, the Savage Model 16FLSS.

The rifle is part of Savage’s “Weather Warrior” series. This means that the rifle is made in stainless steel with a durable synthetic stock. The combination gives the rifle an attractive look that will last for decades — even standing up to the abuse that I put a rifle through.

The rifle is very nicely light-weight. The .308 caliber (7.62mm NATO) version weighs just 6.5 pounds. This makes the rifle easy to carry for extended hunting trips.

The 16FLSS comes in a wide variety of calibers: .223 Rem, .22-250 Rem, .243 Win, 7mm-08 Rem, .308 Win, .270 WSM, .7mm WSM, and .300 WSM. The 116FLSS is available for long action calibers: .270 Winchester, .30-06, 7mm Rem Mag, .300 Win Mag, and .338 Win Mag.

.308 is fully adequate for deer, or any other North American game animal. .308 also has the advantage of being 100% compatible with 7.62mm NATO. This makes .308 ubiquitous and inexpensive — and it makes .308 a good caliber for a long-term investment.

Savage Rifles feature the Savage AccuTrigger, which is user-adjustable and quite effective and helping shooters maintain accuracy during the trigger pull.

The Weather Warrior series comes drilled and tapped for scope mounts, a practical necessity for the modern deer hunter.

Best of all, Savage rifles are prices very attractively. With Savage, you get top quality and features at very reasonable prices.

But for me, the greatest feature was Savage’s support for left-handed shooters. We southpaws don’t get a lot of love from most major gun manufacturers, so I very much appreciate Savage’s making the perfect deer rifle — and the perfect deer rifle for me.

Magazines have long been one of the top causes of failure-to-fire conditions in M16/M4/AR15 type rifles.

Mr. Folzts presentation describes three areas of improvement for the magazines:

Improved follower and spring for current 30rd magazine

Redesigned composite magazine

Magazine feed lips inspection tool

Individually and together, these improvements will save the lives of American soldiers in the field while concurrently reducing the cost of magazines.

Civilian magazine manufacturers will also benefit from the Army’s research and development efforts, which will give civilian shooters access to lower-cost and higher-quality composite magazines. Plus, we will also be able to refit our existing magazines with the higher-reliability springs and followers. In addition, we will be able to test our magazines feed lips to know when we can use an aluminum magazine and when we need to repair or replace one.

A friend recently asked me to recommend a .380 handgun. My recommendation was, and is, not to purchase a .380 handgun.

The .380 caliber made more sense years ago when no really good and very small 9mm handguns were available on the market. Back then, a Walther PPK in .380 caliber was sometimes a reasonable choice because its small size and weight provided significantly improved concealability.

Today, the existence of such fine firearms as the Kahr PM9 makes it quite difficult to justify the purchase of a .380 handgun.

At 16oz, the Kahr PM9 is a full five ounces lighter than the 21oz Walther PPK. It is also shorter than the PPK by more than half an inch — even though its barrel is a full inch longer. The PM9 is just under one tenth of an inch taller than the earlier .380.

The 9mm Parabellum (Luger) round used in the PM9 packs considerably more punch than the 9mm Short (Kurz) round used in the Walther PPK — about 65% more power. And yet, the Kahr PM9 is quite reasonably pleasant to shoot.

If you feel comfortable with more recoil, Kahr also makes a PM40. The PM40 is just one eighth of an inch wider than the PM9. The two handguns are virtually indistinguishable from each other — until you fire them. The .40 S&W cartridge is significantly more powerful than the 9mm Parabellum cartridge. The PM40 packs quite a kick in terms of recoil in return for the extra edge it gives you in firepower. I don’t recommend the PM40 for inexperienced shooters, but it is a fine little handgun.

In addition, the pistol features an ambidextrous slide release and an ambidextrous magazine release.

The SIG SAUER P250 is obviously aimed at law enforcement agencies which must cater to a wide variety of shooters. The design of the P250 enables these agencies to provide a more appropriate sidearm to each individual shooter, at a minimum cost.
